Printed on very frail, brown rag paper. At the top left an eagle over the ocean. To the right is a steamboat. 'ONE DOLLAR/payable at their house in Manhattan' at the bottom. Unlisted Series in Whitfield, who lists a note from a slightly late 1862 written date series on a lithographed form by Middleton, Strobridge & Co., Cin. Pipher was a dry goods dealer and may have operated as a quasi-private bank based on the obligation. Some minor voids in the paper, but essentially all there. Some light soiling. Fine for the paper type.
