ALABAMA. Private Scrip Issuer, payable in 'TENNESSEE or ALABAMA Bank Notes'. $1.00. A. Florence. No date, late 1820's to early 1830's. A signed and issued bill, the issuer's signatures are hard to decipher. Printed on bank note paper at a slightly smaller size than normal bank notes of the era. Imprint of Fairman, Draper, Underwood & Co. concealed in eagle's ribbon at the base. Liberty as an Indian princess seated at the top center. At the left a woman with '1' in circle and Washington in the right end panel. Similar to Walter Rosene, Jr. 83-1; Rarity 7 (Alabama Obsolete Notes and Scrip; SPMC, 1984), but the signatures are different. A very rare scrip note from one of the most collected towns on the state. The first we have seen except for the plated type in Rosene. The signatures are certainly period and we feel the engraved form type may have been used by several Florence area merchants. Cut a bit close with several pressed out folds done very well at Barrows of Richmond. Extremely Fine is accurate for this great rarity that will bring a surprising price in all likelihood.
