Washington County Bank. $6.00. Calais, ME. Late 1830's-early 1840's. India paper Proof by New England Bank Note Co. Boston. Liberty, Justice and Literature seated at the top center. At the left is 'SIX' vertically in a panel. At the far right are two cherubs with hops. Haxby ME-250 G20. One of the most common banks of issue in the late 1830's from the north east. However, those notes are $1, $2, $3, $5, and $10 notes. These are the first notes we have seen personally of this extremely rare odd denomination series. We believe this is the only $6.00 note type on the State of Maine. Not in the NEBN Archive book broken up Smythe in 2000 or in the Norman Pullen Sale. Superb.
