Chatham Bank. $1000.00. A. New York, NY. 1850's. India paper Proof by Wellstood, Hanks, Hay & Whiting, New-York. Portrait of Washington in oval over the straight Gothic fonted title. At the bottom center is the Bank die. At the upper left is a vignette of Prosperity holding a money bag and at the right is Ceres holding a scythe. Haxby NY-1495 G20 SENC. A stupendous layout appropriate for a $1,000.00 note from an important bank. Like the $500.00 above, this note had severe condition flaws that were well remedied at Barrows in Richmond, Virginia. The note now has strength and the integrity of a complete note. There were several vertical tears at the left, some other tears, and two corners rejoined. Very Fine, but at first glance looks choice. The technical grade is meaningless as this is likely unique. We have never seen another of the type and all proofs from the bank are Rarity 7 or 8.
