Virginia Treasury Note. $100.00. A. Richmond. Aug. 13, '186'1. Hoyer & Ludwig, Richmond, VA. Red vignette protectors of seated Plenty and Moneta flanking '100' outlined denomination. At the center Washington with the title above in a curve. At the left, female holds the title in a banner using her left hand. At the right a panel with 'HUNDRED'. Criswell 1. No.1036. A gorgeous note type and rarer than the $50.00 note of this series. The Sanderson Collection note (lot 3561 in the 2001 Memphis Sale) was the sheet mate to this note. This example is quite exceptional from the face with even and broad margins that are rarely seen on this series. There are mount remnants on the verso of the note that have no affect on the vivid color and face impression of the note. Close examination yields the hint of a central, vertical bend and some other handling. However, this is finer than many supposed gem notes of this type we have seen in the past two decades. To be conservative, Choice About Uncirculated. Worth a major premium above the technical grade's merits and perhaps as much as a full bore new note.
