Virginia Treasury Note. $50.00. A. Richmond. Aug. 13, '186'1. Hoyer & Ludwig, Richmond, VA. Red protector grill, upper right counter and upper left obligation boxes. Ceres and Commerce with an urn at the top center, flanked to the right by the red '50' counter. In the upper right a portrait of John Tyler. At the far left in an ornate oval is the Virginia Arms (trampling tyranny). Criswell 2. No.1017. A rare and popular series. The note falls in the serial number sequence of several other high grade notes (such as the Sanderson Collection (Smythe, June 2001) notes: lot 3560 was serial No.1045 and lot 3561 was No.1016, only one serial number away). No complete census has been compiled, but we believe less than thirty are known in collections. The face appearance is of a new note, but there is a vertical fold and handling. A pinhole in the title (similar to Sanderson, lot 3561) and the bottom margin is trimmed in slightly at the right center. Overall, Extremely Fine. A lovely type.
Ex Julian Blanchard, September 15, 1955.
Please note that in Criswell the $50.00 is listed after the $100.00. This was a nuance of the antique Criswell listings that still affects how auction catalogue listings are sometimes organized today. Against the old NASCA traditions (using Criswell number order), we catalogue Southern State notes in series and denomination order whenever possible.
