Oil City Bank. $20.00. B. Oil City, PA. September 15, 1864. India paper Face Proof by American Bank Note Co. N.Y. Green protector and flanking '20' protectors around the central portrait of a young woman titled Vine (according to Roger Durand, Vignette III). At the lower left a locomotive and at the right an oil derrick. Haxby PA-380 G10a. The issued notes used green security backs. On this series $20.00 are rare in any form. This is only the third $20.00 we have seen. The other two were on a proof sheet we saw nearly fifteen years ago that was cut up. Those proofs had '0000' numbers in red and were stamped 'SPECIMEN'. One of those notes was later offered in the January, 2003 CAA sale and sold for well over $1,000.00. Pressed professionally by Barrows, Richmond, Virginia at one time. Superb color and brightness. Very Choice.
