
1861 Robert Anderson Defense of Fort Sumter Medal. 4th Class. Copper electrotypes, filled, joined and bronzed. 64.2 mm. Rims 8.2 - 8.6 mm. thick. Choice Uncirculated. A lovely example, with rich and even mahogany and brown color and a sharp strike. Only 51 were struck for presentation to the enlisted men in Robert Anderson's command. The obverse is Anderson's head facing right while the reverse shows Peter Hart, one of Fort Sumter's non-commissioned officers, re-stepping the flag after it had been shot away from its base during the southern siege. These medals were made for the New York City Chamber of Commerce and were presented to members of the Fort Sumter defense.
