Chief's Medal, ca. 1890. Bronze nickelplate, 60.6mm. Extremely Fine. Obv. Star in circle of dots, TRAVAIL ET PROGRES, Work and Progress. Rev. State name around CHIFFERIE/ INDIGÉNE/ RECONNUE, Native Leadership Recognized. Ball-loop to base metal squirrel chain. An historic link to a dark era of exploitation brought to an end by the Congo Reform Association of E.D. Morel and Sir Roger Casement. The Independent State was annexed to Belgium in October 1908.
