Sabine Pass was the renamed Sabine City opened up by Sam Houston and Phillip Sublett. On September 5, 1863 it was the site of an awesome charge by the Union forces under William Franklin and 5,000 men. The Confederates defended the position with a mere 42 men and six cannon. Shortly after commencement, the Confederacy crippled a Union gun boat and after taking out the second gun boat, the Union forces were thwarted. The Confederates in the quick action of 45 minutes took no casualties and the Union lost men as prisoners.
