DELAWARE. G.W. Willin. 50¢. Georgetown. 'Nov. 1, 1862'. All red, paddlewheeler heads left, title at left. Unissued. Extremely Fine. Toning, slight cutting in on top edge; Joshua C. Townshend. 15¢. Indian River, Delaware. 'December 1, 1862'. All red, Indian princess and Ceres left end; beehive under title. Unissued. Very rare town and first we have seen. Extremely Fine, diagonal handling fold; Wm. P. Orr. 50¢. Lewes. 'Oct. 1, 1862'. All blue, Washington bottom right panel, '50' above; issuer in left end. Unissued. About Extremely Fine, hard fold. All are rare notes from this ''Southern'' sympathizing state that was Union during the War. 3 pieces.
Prior to the War, there were many slaves in Delaware (and Maryland also) and obviously this is a true ''border'' state. However, the close proximity to the District would not have favored the Union well if the State had seceded and the Confederacy held harbor positions there.
