State of Virginia. May 1, 1780 Act. Twenty Dollars. No.4027. Handwritten date ''Oct. 9, 1781.'' Signed by Craig and Stark; countersigned on the back by Fleming. Printed on thin paper, watermarked 'CONFEDE/RATION'. Standard size, designs and imprint as used on Maryland and other State issued ''Guaranteed'' notes. A scarce series of Guaranteed notes. There were 33,000 notes authorized of this denomination on the Act. The highest denomination on the Act and used on the Guaranteed series. This note is a riveting Gem example.
The note is virtually flawless. Gem Crisp Uncirculated. Exceptional paper quality, printing clarity, deep embossing and back color. The back has a subtle, uniform hue to it compared to the face. Face margins are perfect and wide for the issue. The back lands completely on the paper with a very wide margin at the right with faint pencil code at the upper right. An exceptional type for a top flight set and a note that is indicative of the high quality that has been a keen thread throughout the superb Colonial notes in this sale.
