State of Virginia. May 1, 1780 Act. Five Dollars. No.1631. Handwritten date ''June 1, 1781.'' Signed by Simmons and Craig; countersigned on the back by F. Webb. Printed on thin paper, watermarked 'CONFEDE/RATION'. Standard size, designs and imprint as used on Maryland and other State issued ''Guaranteed'' notes. A scarce series of Guaranteed notes. There were 33,000 notes authorized of this denomination on the Act. A second 1780 Act Five Dollars printed on crisp paper and with immaculate surfaces. Crisp Uncirculated. The paper, brightness, and printing are all there. However, three of the four sides are razor thin on the margins. Deep embossing and lovely still. Clarke pencil code on the back, ''HC/Azzz.'' This cost $10.00 seventy five or more years ago. The note was well regarded then and makes this a comparatively strong value today.
Ex F.C.C. Boyd Estate; T. James Clarke; Henry Chapman.
This pedigree is confirmed in the Clarke inventory log book (ex George F Kolbe John J. Ford, Jr. Numismatic Library Part One Sale, lot 201 [ordered under F.C.C. Boyd as a topic].
