Continental Congress. April 11, 1778 Yorktown Issue. Forty Dollars. No.13981. Contemporary Counterfeit. ''Signed'' by D. Reintzel and J.[edediah] Snowden. New face emblem designing by Francis Hopkinson. Thirteen stars surround fire on altar, the All Seeing Eye above, motto CONFEDERATION. New nature print back design. Newman Listed Counterfeit, 4th edition appendix pages 462-463. Printed on fairly thin paper stock. Several lettering variances in the first five lines of the text. The paper has a very different character to the touch than genuine paper used on this issue. Extremely Fine. Not folded, but with some heavy handling and a pinhole. Wide face margins, not seen on genuine bills as modern-day collectors are aware, and deeply inked on the face. Pencil notation on back bottom edge ''counterfeit'' and petty back right end stain.
Ex F.C.C. Boyd Estate.
This counterfeit type and its variants were a plague on the issue and forced a recall. This Newman listed counterfeit is well specified on an official period broadside, illustrated on pages 464-465 of the 4th edition of Newman.
