Continental Congress. February 17, 1776 Resolution. Six Dollars. No.56918. Signed by Coats and Williams. Paper, size, styles, and imprint as previous. Motif and motto as used on the May 10, 1775 Session and November 29, 1775 Resolution notes. A fascinating and unique item. The note has its full, wide right sheet selvege with outside edge deckling. Inscribed in black pen on the face is the following: ''Presented to me by/W.S. Appleton Esq/Boston U.S. June 1, 1856/Jos. Warren.'' The note itself is quite sharp, deeply inked and printed. Choice Extremely Fine. Long fold along the top, margin handling and selvege gutter fold at the right. A great numismatic combination spanning the generations of elite collectors.
Ex F.C.C. Boyd Estate.
William Sumner Appleton (1840-1903) was one of the foremost American numismatists of all time. He acquired the Mickley 1804 Dollar for $775 in trade items from Edward Cogan. His major field of expertise was United States medals and he was a major contributor to Betts' ''Colonial American History...'' volume. Sales of coins after his death were via Steigerwalt and Elder sales in 1907 and 1913. His medals were bequeathed to the Massachusetts Historical Society, later to be sold in 1973.
