Current Money of Virginia. July 17, 1775 Ordinance. One Shilling and Three Pence or Fifteen Pence. No.44077. Signed by Edm.[mund] Randolph. Printed on heavy rag paper with blue fibers. 87mm by 71mm. Uniface. Elaborate border cuts with arms upper right, in right border 'A PISTEREEN'. Denomination in top line text with 'AND'. In the Ford-Boyd Collection, rarities take all forms. Notes that are virtually unknown or unique are also joined by fairly available items, but in extraordinary grade. This note falls into the latter classification. This lowest denomination small format note on the Act had 50,000 notes printed (split evenly between two varieties of the text language in the top line).
A Very Fine or even an Extremely Fine note can probably be obtained of this type, but the condition of this note leaps over any small format note on Virginia we have ever seen. Printed from a very deeply inked plate, the deep clarity and sharpness is simply stunning. With a glass and time, perhaps some handling can be found. Perhaps, the corners are slightly ''dinged,'' However, this must be classified as Gem Crisp Uncirculated. Clear, close, but perfectly cut and with even margining. This is a magnificent note in terms of eye appeal and represents the Colony well. Another Ford-Boyd note that should eclipse perceived market trends considerably.
