Robert Carter Nicholas (1728-1780) was a member of the House of Burgesses (1756-1777) and Colonial Treasurer (1766-1777). At the time these notes were signed, the conservative Nicholas, though eventually favoring the Revolution, made Patrick Henry retract his ''Give Me Liberty or Give Me Death'' speech upon threat of expulsion from the House.
