South Carolina. February 8, 1779 Ordinance. Ninety Dollars (£146:5:0). Warrior Vignette. ARMISA CONCURRITE CAMPO. Engraved face and back by Thomas Coram, Hercules Strangling a Lion. No.1916. Signed by Gaillard Jr., Atkins and Cooke. Printed on thick white paper stock. Standard size, approximately 122mm by 75mm. The top face with ornate cursive 'NINETY DOLLARS', denominations in small cartouches at left and bottom. Floral wreath border on other three sides with vignette and motto lower left. Back vignette (parallel to face) within four banners.
Signed by Coram in the drapery. Also, on some notes, there are engraved marks concealed in the upper right back banner with 'DOLLARS'. On this note, there is no engraved mark on the left inside turn of the banner.
A second example, but with no mark on the back banner. A crisp note with strong paper, thicker than most seen by us on the issue. Paper quality-wise, Choice About Uncirculated. Moderate left side bending. The face is trimmed inwards, evenly and considerably, on all four sides. The back vignette is downwards into both banners, but Hercules's head is on the paper. Petty bottom face fingerprint and back upper left corner pencil code and ''Thick''. A sharp note despite the cutting.
