South Carolina. February 8, 1779 Ordinance. Seventy Dollars (£113:15:0). Hope With Anchor Vignette. SPES MENTIS SOLATIA. Engraved face and back by Thomas Coram, Prometheus Bound and Attacked by Vulture. No.4771. Signed by Cooke, Smythe and Scott. Printed on thick white paper stock. Standard size, approximately 122mm by 75mm. Ornate cursive 'SEVENTY DOLLARS' along the top, the other three sides with interwoven flower petal vine, denominations in small cartouches left and bottom. Back vignette (parallel to face) between banners. Signed 'T. Coram Sc.' at the bottom left of vignette.
This denomination also not part of the original four created by the Ordinance. No print figure, like the $50, is specified in Newman. A third example, pleasing to the eye with some petty flaws. The inking is average, but complete. Very Fine Plus. Bright and well margined. Vertical fold and seen from the face, corner handling, and a corner tip fold. There is heavy handling along the top edge resulting in several small edge splits, mainly in the wide margin. Period inked initials ''C.B'' at back right edge.
Ex F.C.C. Boyd Estate.
The issue not only shows many paper variances, but also plate and inking variances as well. Obviously, a premium should be placed on deeply inked and early plate state notes.
