South Carolina. February 8, 1779 Ordinance. Sixty Dollars (£97:10:0). Figure and Cornucopia Vignette. MUTUA DEFENSIO TUTISSIMA. Printed on thick bluish white paper stock. Engraved face and back by Thomas Coram, Lyre, Horns and Flags. No.885. Signed by Scott, Smyth and P.[lowden] Weston. Printed on thick white paper stock. Standard size, approximately 122mm by 75mm. The top with cursive and ornate 'SIXTY DOLLARS', denomination in oblong cartouches at left and bottom. Other three sides with string of ornate bells (tulips?). Back vignette (parallel to face) between banners. The second type in the original authorization with 15,000 printed.
Another beautiful type, like every note on this elegantly excecuted series. A premium example of the technical grade. Choice Extremely Fine. Complete sheet margins on the bottom and sides. There is only vertical bending through the center of the note, not creased, and upper left corner handling. Superbly embossed plate lines on the thick paper. Bright and vivid. Streak of black press ink along wide bottom back edge. Chapman and Clark pencil codes on the back extremities. The look of a superb note and worth nearly that on eye appeal alone.
Ex F.C.C. Boyd Estate; T. James Clarke; Henry Chapman.
