South Carolina. February 8, 1779 Ordinance. Forty Dollars (£65:0:0). Ceres Vignette. MINIME VIOLANDA FIDES. Engraved face and back by Thomas Coram, Angel Blowing Trumpet and Holding Book ANNALS OF AMERICA. No.1437. Signed by Wm. Morgan, Edward Trescot and G.[eorge] Cooke. Printed on thick bluish-white paper stock. Standard size, approximately 122mm by 75mm. Face with elaborate floral vine within straight border line. Back vignette (parallel to face) between banners. Like all the notes on the series, a beautiful type. This denomination was part of the original authorization with 2,000 specified as printed by Newman, the lowest figure for the seven different notes issued.
A stunning example and tough to improve on. Choice Crisp Uncirculated. Wide margined on all four sides with only some light handling in the outer reaches of the lower right corner and along the wide top edge. The impression is deeply inked on both sides. Small penciled ''x'' on the back top edge. Magnificent and worthy of a record price for the note.
