South Carolina. 1777 (December 23, 1776 Act). Four Dollars (£6:10:0). Ship Vignette. THE ACTAEON. IRAM PRUDENTIA VINCIT. No.2753. Four signatures. Signed by Blake [vertical to left], Fisher, Lightwood and Wm. Ancrum. Printed on thick, coarse stock. Standard size, approximately 110mm by 75mm. Standard face style using border cuts with denominations, vignette seal and motto at the lower left. Error date on the face 'December 23, 1777'. Ornamental printed back, denomination and imprint Printed by P. Timothy, 1777. There were 10,000 notes printed which also included notes with the error '1777' date. Like the Two Dollars error type, these are given a premium value.
The most worn bill on this issue date in the Ford-Boyd Collection. Certainly an issued note (to make this from a remainder note on a whim seems ridiculous) with the last '7' replaced with a written '6'. Fine. Better on the face which is lightly soiled. Creased and multifolds with severe back soiling. Old paper mounting strip at back right edge, priced in pencil ''4.00''. Pencil code upper right corner. Not a beauty, but important for the specialist.
Ex F.C.C. Boyd Estate.
