South Carolina. 1777 (December 23, 1776 Act). Two Dollars (£3:5:0). Rooster Vignette. ET SOLI ET MARTI. No.3480. Four signatures. Signed by Blake, Fisher, Lightwood and Wm. Ancrum. Printed on thick, coarse stock. Standard size, approximately 110mm by 75mm. Standard face style using border cuts with denominations, vignette seal and motto at the lower left. Error date on the face 'December 23, 1777'. Ornamental printed back, denomination and imprint Printed by Peter Timothy, 1777.
There were 10,000 notes printed of both types (with and without error). This note circulated and clearly only has four signatures. We doubt five signatures were needed to circulate a $2 note or a $1. The last '7' in the date is over-written with a''6'' which also says this note was properly issued. Given a premium value in the 4th edition Newman catalogue. We do not know the relative rarity ratio of error notes to proper dates. Very Fine. Creased with moderate soiling. Trimmed slightly in and unevenly. Small mount remnant on back. In this form, quite a ''sleeper'' for the specialist.
Ex F.C.C. Boyd Estate.
