South Carolina. 1777 (December 23, 1776 Act). Two Dollars (£3:5:0). Rooster Vignette. ET SOLI ET MARTI. No.1582. Four signatures. Signed by E.[dward] Blake [to the left, and vertically in red], Price, Fisher and Lightwood. Printed on thick, coarse stock. Standard size, approximately 110mm by 75mm. Standard face style using border cuts with denominations, vignette seal and motto at the lower left. Ornamental printed back, denomination and imprint Printed by Peter Timothy, 1777.
There were 10,000 notes printed (including the error date variety). This note has four signatures and a back pen endorsement. However, it still has a ''remainder-like'' character to it. Did this denomination type have five signature issued notes? We do not have one in the Ford-Boyd Collection to compare it to. Choice About Uncirculated. Very crisp as new with only heavy corner handling at the lower right and some edges. Complete, but unevenly trimmed margins. High grade for this many signature. Much tougher than doubles or singles. Period pen endorsement at bottom back left edge.
Ex F.C.C. Boyd Estate.
