South Carolina. March 6, 1776 Resolve. Two Pounds Five Shillings. No.6472. Signed by Waring and Sam.[uel] Legare. Printed on laid paper. Uniface. Typeset, horizontal format note with ornamental frame and left end indent. 88mm by 58mm. Black and orange texts with Hebrew and Greek letters used. There were 10,000 notes printed of this type. Like most of the notes from this Resolve £3 and less, where are they now? This note has a lovely and subtle typography with wonderful ornaments and devices.
A very boldly embossed note with extraordinary margins and a complete left indent. Bright, vivid, and boasting exceptional color. About Extremely Fine. Hard vertical back crease with a visible ridge on the face. The upper right corner tip is neatly shaved off, just missing the ornament. Paper mounting strip along upper back edge. Stunning eye appeal and great rarity. This note came from the Hans Schulman 1955 75th Anniversary Sale with the Jacob Spiro New Jersey Colonial notes. It brought all of $9.50 on its $15.00 estimate. South Carolina specialists will recognize this as a treasure on their home.
Ex F.C.C. Boyd Estate; 75th Anniversary Sale (Hans M.F. Schulman, Spring 1955, lot 966).
Purchased by Mr. Boyd at this sale with his code on the envelope. Boyd died in 1958, just three years after this event. We are not certain how many New Jersey notes he bought at the sale as there were no tickets for that sale in that portion of the Ford-Boyd Collection. No serial number data was placed in the Spiro lot descriptions in the Schulman catalogue.
