Colony of Rhode Island. March 18, 1776. Forty Shillings. No.1214. Signed by William Ellery, Signer of the Declaration of Independence, Greene and Wanton. Printed on thin paper. 71mm by 110mm. Printed on both sides, standard Rhode Island style. Within three border cuts are typeset texts, Rhode Island seal at left, signatures at bottom. Ornamental pattern back from edge to edge, 'Forty/Shillings' at center. Imprint 'Printed by/JOHN CARTER'. There were only 2,000 notes printed of this type on a scarce series. This is the fourth and final William Ellery signed note in this incredible selection. This note was obtained from NASCA's Maryland Historical Society Sale in 1977 where it realized $975.00.
This is a moderately circulated note with an excellent black inked signature. Fine Plus. Creased with a right side split and a top right edge split. Bottom edge fold and corner handling. Moderately toned and soiled. Bottom back period penned endorsement. You might see 100 Hart or Morton or Hopkinson notes for every one of these. A final chance tonight for an attractive Ellery.
