Colony of Rhode Island. March 18, 1776. Thirty Shillings. No.1439. Signed by Wanton, Dexter and Wm.[William] Ellery, Signer of the Declaration of Independence. Printed on thin paper. 72mm by 105mm. Printed on both sides, standard Rhode Island style. Within three border cuts are typeset texts, Rhode Island seal at left, signatures at bottom. Ornamental pattern back from edge to edge, 'Thirty/Shillings' at center. Imprint 'Printed by/JOHN CARTER'. There were also 3,000 notes printed of this note type.
Important and very desirable. The Newman Plate Note, so illustrated on page 392 of the fourth edition. The higher denominations have a greater tendency to appear in higher grades. However, anything better than Fine is tough. This is another very sharp black ink signature Ellery note. Very Fine to Extremely Fine. Bold and crisp. Two diagonal folds, multiple light corner folds, and heavy handling on the corners. Boyd pencil code at back bottom left edge. Magnificent eye appeal and paper quality. In a market with John Hart notes pressing four figures or more depending on grade, these Ellery notes represent an amazing opportunity. Yet another in a long repertoire of Ford-Boyd museum quality rarities.
