Colony of Rhode Island. January 15, 1776. Twenty Shillings. No.2127. Signed by Cole, Wanton and Congdon. Printed on laid paper. 75mm by 106mm. Printed on both sides, standard Rhode Island style. Within three border cuts are typeset texts, Rhode Island seal at left, signatures at bottom. Ornamental pattern back from edge to edge, 'Twenty/Shillings' at center. Imprint 'Printed by/JOHN CARTER'. There were 6,000 notes printed from this denomination.
The Newman Plate Note, so illustrated on page 391 of the fourth edition. A scarce series for any note and like most other Rhode Island issues during this time frame, very rare in high grade. This note was certainly one of the finest notes on the issue date Mr. Newman had ever seen and it graces page 391 of his important volume. The note speaks for itself and is yet another grand bill from Rhode Island.
A close to exceptional example and this must be among the finest known for the issue, as well as the denomination. Very clean and pleasing with some natural and light wear. On the face, the note presents itself as appearing nearly two grades higher. However, technically Very Fine to Extremely Fine. Lightly quarter folded with very short side edge splits, long top edge crease, and short corner folds. Still very crisp with moderate perimeter and corner handling. Some very petty right edge fraying must be scrutinized under strong light and over-handling the paper with your fingers. Subtle toning that is very pleasant. Period penned ''26/8'' at back bottom edge. Another Rhode Island wonder note that likely will not require an upgrade.
