Province of Pennsylvania. March 10, 1769. Ten Shillings. ''Bettering House Money.'' No.1781. Signed by Stephen Collins, James Penrose, and Luke Morris. Printed on thicker, coarser stock than lower denominations (Two Shillings and less). Standard horizontal Pennsylvania size and format, approximately 88mm by 75mm. Typeset face with border cuts, Penn Arms at the upper right side. No plate letter, asterisk after date on face. Nature print back with Hall and Sellers imprint, date '1769'. These higher denomination notes with significantly lower print figures than the small format change bills or notes of Two Shillings or less. Only 1,000 notes printed.
A very sharp and superior example, bright and clean. Very Fine to Extremely Fine. Lightly quarter folded with the slightly diagonal fold nearly a crease. Upper right corner bend and tightly trimmed. The curtly listed ''Very Fine'' price column in Newman reflects inaccurately how hard a note this is to obtain in strict Very Fine grade. Worth multiples of the listed $300 and tougher than many of the earlier series Franklin imprint notes in this grade.
Ex F.C.C. Boyd Estate.
The motto in the Penn Arms is Mercy and Justice on a small banner underneath.
