 North Carolina Currency. December 29, 1785 Act at Newbern. Twenty Shillings or One Pound or Two and a Half Dollars. No.8857. Signed by Hunt and Tatom. Printed on rigid, coarse paper watermarked 'NORTH/CAROLINA'. 109mm by 77mm. The face with elaborate border cut frame, slightly different from other notes on the series, enclosing the enactment texts and denomination at the top 'TWENTY SHILLINGS' and smaller 'One/Pound' to the right. Underneath, to the left, is a large vignette of the Angel Gabriel on church top enclosed in vertical rectangle. Serial number space below and signature space at the lower right. The bottom border cut with 'COUNTERFEITERS-BEWARE'.
The back orientation is parallel to the face and uses an ornamental border to enclose typeset texts. At the top, the denomination and in the center the obligation. At the right end, 'To counterfeiters is Death!' and '20s'. At the left end the imprint 'HILLSBOROUGH: Printed by/THOMAS DAVIS.' with the letters of his name alternating with ornaments. A rare series and an attractive example. Very Good to Fine. A very solid note with vertical crease and multifolds. The paper used is slightly thinner and has worn well. The face is fairly bright and the back has some soiling. A very short internal juncture slit in the note's center. A very attractive note and ideal for any Colonial type set. A high grade note on this Act.
