 North Carolina Currency. December 29, 1785 Act at Newbern. Ten Shillings or Two Crowns. No.21194. Signed by Tatom and Hunt. Printed on rigid, coarse paper watermarked 'NORTH/CAROLINA'. 106mm by 76mm. The face with elaborate border cut frame, slightly different from other notes on the series, enclosing the enactment texts and denomination at the top 'TEN SHILLINGS'. Underneath, to the left, is a small vignette of a crown and book, pages with text 'THE LAWS' and 'OUR KING'. Serial number space below and signature space at the lower right. The bottom border cut with 'COUNTERFEITERS-BEWARE'.
The back orientation is parallel to the face and uses an ornamental border to enclose typeset texts. At the top, the denomination and in the center the obligation. At the right end, 'Counterfeiters shall suffer Death!' and 'TWO CROWNS'. At the left end the imprint 'HILLSBOROUGH: Printed by/THOMAS DAVIS.' with the letters of his name alternating with ornaments. A third denomination on this rare series making this, as usual, another historic Ford-Boyd Colonial paper section. A pleasing note from the face.
Very Good or so. Vertical fold with split that is cloth stripped on the back. Brighter than the prior two notes with some back soiling. A few pinholes across the body of the note. Priced at $250.00 in Very Good in the 4th edition of Newman. Not often seen and deceiving. A rare note.
