North Carolina Currency. December 29, 1785 Act at Newbern. Two Shillings or 24 Pence. No.459. Signed by Tatom and Hunt. Printed on rigid, coarse paper watermarked 'NORTH/CAROLINA'. 105mm by 77mm. The face with elaborate border cut frame enclosing the enactment texts and denomination at the top 'TWO SHILLINGS (24 Pence)'. Underneath, at left center, is a small vignette of plowshare with motto below, 'AGRICULTURE' in a RECTANGLE. Serial number in ornate brackets below and signature space at the lower right. The bottom border cut with 'COUNTERFEITERS-BEWARE'.
The back orientation is perpendicular to the face and uses an ornamental border to enclose typeset texts. At the top, the denomination and in the center the obligation. At the bottom, 'Tis Death to Counterfeit!'. At the bottom, the imprint 'HILLSBOROUGH: Printed by/THOMAS DAVIS.' A second denomination on this rare series and also a lower denomination, likely to have been worn and redeemed for larger notes. Not priced in Newman in any grade. Good to Very Good. The vertical crease is split in half and there is a cloth strip on the back holding the note together. Dark and soiled on both sides with a multitude of central pinholes. Very acceptable grade factoring in the rarity. There are not many others known at all of this type.
Ex F.C.C. Boyd Estate.
There was no Half Crown (Two Shillings Six Pence) note from this Act in the Ford-Boyd Collection. The Five Shillings was in the Ford X Sale in May, 2005.
