North Carolina Currency. May 17, 1783 Act at Hillsborough. Twenty Shillings. No.768. Signed by Hunt and McCulloch. 107mm by 70mm. Printed on both sides on thin laid paper. Face border cuts, similar to the 10 Shillings, 'COUNTERFEITERS BEWARE' at bottom. Lower left, vignette of a royal crown above a book, pages inscribed from left to right, 'THE LAWS' and 'OUR KING'. The back is perpendicular in orientation to the face. Obligation in the center with denomination '1 Pound' at top and at the bottom the imprint 'HALIFAX:/Printed by Thomas Davis'.
A rare series and type. Apparently a genuine note as the diagnostic of the 'y' in the large 'Twenty' is parallel, and not above the 't' to the left of it (per Newman's counterfeit section). A difficult note to grade. Good or so. Multiple splits and portions of the notes severed and rejoined from the back with stamp hinges. Edge pieces chipped and rough edged, also with some back reinforcing. Despite the flaws, not bad looking from the face. Professional restoration should enhance the eye appeal as 95% of the note is present.
