North Carolina Currency. May 17, 1783 Act at Hillsborough. Ten Shillings. No.203. Contemporary Counterfeit. ''Signed'' by B.[enjamin] McCulloch (faded) and J.[ohn] Hunt. Printed on thin laid paper. 110mm by 76mm. Elaborate face border cuts, 'COUNTERFEITERS BEWARE' at the bottom. Vignette at lower left of ships approaching fort, flag at top, below motto 'COMMERCIO'. The back is perpendicular to the face. Obligation in the center with 'Ten Shillings' at top and imprint below, 'Printed by Thomas Davis,/1783'.
A rare series with most notes known counterfeit or in very low grade. A Newman listed counterfeit from a weak and obvious counterfeit plate. This might be the most obvious fake plate on all Colonial paper currency, but is still a tough note and particularly the high grade this note is in. Choice Extremely Fine. Light corner folds and paper ripples at the lower right as made. A very bright and vivid note. Mostly well centered, but the right end is close and is slightly ragged. Period pen endorsement at the back right end.
