State of North Carolina. May 10, 1780 Act. Five Hundred Dollars. Divitiae Reipublicae dant mihi Pretium. 'T' in Cartouche. No.334. Signed by Caron and Coore. Printed on thick paper. Typeset face with ornamental borders. Simple pattern back, similar to 1778 notes, with imprint 'Printed by JA. DAVIS, 1780'. There was only one motto type used for the denomination, but like the $250 notes, there are two face plate types. The 'T' in 'This' is large and in a cartouche, identical to that used on the $250. According to Newman, the print figure was only 500 notes, making this a rarity based purely on the print run.
A key note for a set and very attractive. Very Fine to Extremely Fine. Not creased, but a long and heavy handling fold at the upper left diagonal with adjacent handling. There is other handling on this bright and crisp note. Two small toning patches on the face and a long mounting hinge strip on the back top edge strip. A very handsome note for the specialists.
Ex F.C.C. Boyd Estate.
This is also a new style pattern back, similar to, but not identical to any of the more complex backs used on the 1778 notes. The sheeting for the $250 and $500 notes is also uncertain, but they also appear to be related.
