North Carolina Currency. April 2, 1776 Halifax Issue. Half a Dollar. North American Bear Vignette. No.840. Signed by Haywood and Webb. Printed on laid paper, partial watermark at the right 'GR' in wreath. Banner at top and denomination at the left. This type has the vignette title 'American Bear' under the vignette. A second example of this type with a much stronger plate impression. A distinct and darkly inked vignette (note only 24 serial numbers from the previous note). There is much paper integrity despite the note being About Fine or so. Hard vertical crease and other handling folds. The top with a quarter inch split and a much shorter one at the bottom. Toned to a uniform light brown. Quite an attractive example due to the strong plate impression.
Ex F.C.C. Boyd Estate.
This series has many complexities from paper types, watermarks and particularly plate states. It may have been the case that plates were subjected to re-engraving by local printers and studies of particular vignette type may prove that in the future.
