North Carolina Currency. April 2, 1776 Halifax Issue. One Eighth of a Dollar. Lion Vignette. No.12509. Signed by Alston and Hill. Printed on thick laid paper, much different than the previous $1/8 and $1/16 notes above. Smaller format size. Thin vine border at left and thin ornaments at right. One of the 12,500 printed and a splendid example.
The vignettes on this series are quite enjoyable when viewed with a magnification loop. This lion is not exactly bound for the ''Dreyfus Fund'' commercials. His mane is not his ''main'' asset as this is his bad hair day. His repose is sphinx-like and interestingly drawn to say the least.
A very sharp note, exceptional grade and a tough type. Choice Extremely Fine. A light vertical fold only on the stiffer paper. Corner bends on both right corners. There is a very short slit at the right end that is paper patched from the back. Lightly toned overall. Pencil price on back ''10-'' on back upper left corner. The paper quality is stunning for any note from this issue.
Ex F.C.C. Boyd Estate.
The pricing column for Uncirculated notes in the 4th edition of Newman was inadvertent. Strictly uncirculated notes of any type on this issue date would be incredible. Any note from this issue classified strictly Extremely Fine or better is likely to be heading onto the condition census when such data is accumulated by qualified specialists in the future.
This note will not be overpaid for tonight, even for a strong hammer price many multiples of the last catalogue value. When this note and price is viewed later in the future, such notes will finally be recognized for their great significance.
