North Carolina Currency. August 21, 1775 Session at Hillsborough Act. Eight Dollars. No.3853. Four signatures, signed by R.[ichard] Cogdell, Sam.[uel] Johnston, Andrew Knox, and R.[ichard] Caswell. Printed on laid paper (similar to December 1771 Act paper type). 110mm by 70mm. Uniface, ornate left end border, various fonts with 'No. Carolina Currency' in Gothic type, and vignette at lower left. Vignette with Britannia self impaling herself with sword, motto INFELIX BRITANNIA [Unhappy England]. Printed from engraved plates with no imprint. A fifth denomination from this rare series of notes for any denomination. A wonderful vignette type, but sadly a filler only. Fair to Good. Vertical splitting with wide paper patch on the back. Rough edged, particularly so at the top right and right end. Other corner rounding, but the vignette is intact and visible. Boyd wasn't able to improve on this note or did not make the effort.
