State of New York. February 8, 1788. Five Shillings. No.10476. Signed by Nicholas Hoffman and Hendrick Wyckhoff. Printed on thick stock. Elaborate border cuts, banner 'STATE OF NEW YORK' in top cut with '5 SHIL' in center. Typeset in red texts, New York Arms at upper right with '5 s.' below. Imprint 'Maverick, sc.' in right border cut outlined in white on black. Ornate vignetted back (180 degrees, coin turn orientation) with ornamental flourishes. At center, plowshare and agricultural implements. Counterfeit warning and imprint 'Printed by H. Gaine' at the right end. A very late and extremely rare series of Colonial notes. This is an exceptional note and excessively rare. It is The Newman Plate Note, so illustrated on page 289 of the fourth edition. This is another enactment date we do not recall handling or cataloguing before. The condition is lovely. Choice Very Fine. A hard vertical crease, seen mostly from the back. The bottom edges are trimmed in slightly and rounded. However, the surfaces on both sides are bright, vivid and free from any serious soiling. Not only would this note be difficult to improve on, it might be nearly impossible to duplicate. A stunning example where high rarity meets superb condition. One of the most important notes in this Ford XV Sale. Exceptional is the word!
Ex F.C.C. Boyd Estate.
We cite an auction appearance of this type in the August, 1965 Federal Brand Blue Ridge Numismatic Association Sale. Catalogued as lot 773 was serial No.12031 which appears to be fully Very Fine or thereabouts. The note was estimated in the $200 range, which at that time, that was a hefty sum for any Colonial note.
