State of New York. April 18, 1786. Three Pounds. No.3498. Contemporary Counterfeit, and considered as such by Mr. Ford. ''Signed'' Wm. Heyer and by J. Lawrence. Printed on laid paper. Uniface, ornate border cuts on three sides. Banner at top, 'STATE OF NEW YORK'. New York Arms at the left with motto EXCELSIOR in black. Imprint within bottom border 'Printed by S. Loudon'. An Unlisted Counterfeit Denomination in Newman on the Act date. A third denomination type from this rare series of notes that was subjected to counterfeiting. Newman does not list a counterfeit of this type. The status as a counterfeit is quite interesting. Some of the plate diagnostics are similar to the above One Pound note with the details a bit cruder than the known genuine Five Shillings. The back is pen endorsed from the period ''Received of Mr. Henry Garrison Jr./Febr. 17th, 1788-and condemned by Messr/Heyer and Lawrence on the 20th-''. Note, the prior two men were signers on the issue. In any form this is a rare note and this endorsement certainly makes this fascinating. For a note of this series and type, a very choice example. Lovely paper quality, Fine to Very Fine. Perhaps, finer in many respects. A long bottom split on the vertical fold with a paper strip repair. Some other minor splits and a crack in the New York Arms. A minor rust stain on the bottom left edge. Penciled Boyd code 'myxy' (=$10.00) on the back. This was a well regarded rarity over fifty (or more) years ago. An important piece.
Ex F.C.C. Boyd Estate.
