State of New Jersey. 1786. One Shilling. Plate D. No.20989. Signed by M. Ewing and B. Van Cleve. Printed on thinner wove paper watermarked 'NEW JERSEY'. Standard face designs with New Jersey State Arms in back. The shield with three plowshares (a motif used on New Jersey coppers) supported by Plenty and Liberty. The texts in black and red. Standard leaf back in black printed by Isaac Collins. At the back left end '...Trenton,... 1786'. A rare note, despite 50,000 printed using three plate positions. Fine, impaired. A piece at the top center chipped out and placed back and secured from the back with a hinge. Soiled on both sides, but the face color is quite sharp. Appealing still and an affordable example from this tough issue.
Ex F.C.C. Boyd Estate.
Benjamin Van Cleve was an officer in the Revolution. His house was located north of Trenton and Colonel Hand (later General Hand) led a group of Pennsylvania Rifleman right past Van Cleve's house during a famous delaying maneuver protecting George Washington and allowing Washington to win the Second Battle of Trenton, January 2nd, 1777, and the Battle of Princeton. Today this house is used as an alumni office for Rider University, located in Lawrenceville (originally Maidenhead), New Jersey.
