State of New Jersey. 1786. One Shilling. Plate A. No.30258. Signed by J.[ames] Ewing and B. Smith. Printed on thinner, wove paper watermarked 'NEW JERSEY'. Standard face designs with New Jersey State Arms in black. The shield with three plowshares (a motif used on New Jersey coppers) supported by Plenty and Liberty. The texts in black and red. Standard leaf back in black printed by Isaac Collins. At the back left end '...Trenton,.... 1786'. The DuPont 1993 Collection Sale had nine notes from this issue with some duplicates.
A complete denomination run would be an achievement as we believe the Six Pounds to be an important rarity. The good news about the Ford-Boyd notes on this Act is the condition. Most are strong grade as is this example. About Very Fine. The paper is soft from multiple folds and a vertical crease. The eye appeal is of a higher grade note due to the paper having the integrity for better wear, despite many foldings. The surfaces and color are bright with some of the mica still reflecting. A very minor juncture split seen at the bottom center. An excellent type note from this series.
Ex F.C.C. Boyd Estate.
James Ewing signed on the prior Act date, but is not listed as a signer on this Act. The signature is clearly his though.
