State of New Jersey. December 20, 1783 Act. Twelve Shillings. No.1762. Signed by Ewing and Mott. Printed on coarse stock. Size similar to 1781 issue. Standard designs, State seal on face. Leaf design on back and date '1784'. Trenton printed by Isaac Collins. An amazing fourth different denomination from this very rare series, withdrawn with few surviving notes of any type. This was also a denomination note not represented in the important 1993 DuPont Sale of New Jersey Colonial notes and lottery tickets. For the series, an exceptional grade note. This should be high on the condition census for any note on this Act date and certainly the denomination.
It it tempting to allow the rarity to temper the grade upwards. Very Fine or so. Fully intact without a split or void in sight, even when held up to the light. Vertical fold, upper corner creases and handling. Lightly toned with broad margins and slightly rounded corners. Based on the notes of this Act in this offering, very bright and clean on both sides. New Jersey Colonial notes in this league of rarity tend to be underpriced due to the extensiveness of the pre-Revolutionary issues. However, this Confederation era note is a great rarity and should justly find a place in a top notch collection of New Jersey banknotes or any American Colonial paper currency cabinet.
