Colony of New Jersey. March 25, 1776. Six Pounds. No.338. Signed by Rob't Smith, Jn. Johnston, and Smyth. Printed on thinner, rigid paper watermarked 'NEW JERSEY'. Standard face designs with red New Jersey Arms and inside frame. An outer pattern in blue with blue texts. David Rittenhouse engraved the decorative border of this type and signed his work in fine letters. Standard leaf back in black. Burlington printed by Isaac Collins. Not a very rare type, but always in demand due to color, designs and the Rittenhouse tie.
Crisp Uncirculated. The paper quality is exceptional and right up there with the finest we have seen. Boldly impressed on both sides with the richest color contrast of blue and red you can imagine. However, not well anointed in the margin department. The top right is trimmed in slightly and the other margins are dead on close. The color magnification makes this quite a beauty though. Very faint depression on the bottom center edge. Often considered overpriced compared to other Colonial notes. However, the critiques emanate from those who have been ''without;'' opinions best ignored.
Ex F.C.C. Boyd Estate.
The depression on the bottom edge would seem to be a fold split. However, it is likely to be from the string used to secure this bundle of notes long ago. These high denominations were not used widely and the bundled notes could have been used in the treasury to back other obligations. This depression has been observed on other notes in the Ford-Boyd Collection and over the years.
