Colony of the Massachusetts Bay. August 18, 1775. Thirty Shillings. No.8133. Payable on August 18,...Colony of the Massachusetts Bay. August 18, 1775. Thirty Shillings. No.8133. Payable on August 18, 1779. Signed by Sayer and Cushing. Revere Sword in Hand Note. Printed on thick, coarse stock. 72mm by 93mm. Standard face and back designs. This denomination represented in the epic Ford X Sale offering in May, 2006, but with a different payable date (lot 4657, classified in the sale as Contemporary Counterfeit, but not noted as such by Mr. Ford). This note was also classified by Mr. Ford as genuine. As such, it is quite a rare and choice note. The Sword vignette is very well rendered with crisp and vibrant details. If this is the Newman listed counterfeit Thirty Shillings, then it is a dandy!

' Extremely Fine. Horizontal crease as usual and not broken. Both halves are crisp and sharp. Bright with some petty ink specks at the lower left face. The back is very clean with a smudge at the lower left and a paper indentation at the left side under the crease.

Ex F.C.C. Boyd Estate.

The counterfeit listed on this issue needs further research. We quote the footnote from our Ford X catalogue with the strong caveat that we believe our initial analysis on this subject will require future adjustments.

As stated in Ford X ''Several back plate diagnostics in the vignette can be seen when comparing the genuine notes of this issue with the known 30 Shillings counterfeit type. The width of the bottom of the waist coat is wider (16mm on the genuine versus 15mm), facial details stronger on the genuine, the genuine note has a broader hat, the lettering of 'MAGNA CHARTA' is taller on the genuine, the '1' on the back's '1775' is vertical on the genuine and curved on the counterfeit (except the Seven Shillings & Six Pence). There are several other diagnostics that can be scrutinized as well.''

As we have stated in Ford X: ''The Ford-Boyd Colonial has provided a wonderful research source to compare these diagnostics.''
