Maryland. January 1, 1767. One Dollar or Four Shillings Six Pence Sterling. No.11366. Signed by R.[obert]...Maryland. January 1, 1767. One Dollar or Four Shillings Six Pence Sterling. No.11366. Signed by R.[obert] Couden and J.[ohn] Clapham. Printed on sturdy stock. Elaborate border cuts by Sparrow, Colonial Maryland Arms vertically in the center; Spanish mainland dollar 8 Reales coin flanked by pointing hands over the Arms. Nature print back. Imprint 'Printed by JONAS GREEN' on back.

An historic type and according to Eric Newman, the first governmental dollar usage on a currency note in the world and our first American soil ''Dollar Bill''. The Spanish Pillar Coin made for an excellent anti-raising device and pictogram for the barely literate populace who would have used this note and series.

Another very sharp note, likely with a Raymond Estate pedigree. Hard not to call this Gem Crisp Uncirculated. Without exhaustive auction catalogue research, we do not believe we have seen a finer example. Duplicates from Raymond may have appeared in New Netherlands, Pine Tree or NASCA sales in the 1970's. However, that is ancient history and in our experience, we have not handled a note from this issue of this caliber.

Subtle toning, but exceptionally crisp and vivid. Well margined and perfect back centering. This should shatter any record price on this note which is common in Good, but extremely rare in Gem condition. A runaway price should not scare the eventual purchaser as this is a showpiece of the first order.

The Wayte Raymond connection seems likely since the $1 note plated in his 1940 Standard Paper Money Catalogue on page 12 is serial No.11364. Obviously, this is a run of sheets, partial sheets or some sort of pack of fresh and original notes he or Fred Boyd (who edited this section) owned. They seem scattered in the wind nowadays.
