John Waterman erected what was probably the first paper mill in Rhode Island Colony. The mill was two miles from Providence. He later purchased a press from Samuel Kneeland from Boston, but appears to have done little printing [The History of Printing in America by Isaiah Thomas, 1970 reprint, The Imprint Society, page 324].
