Ex T. James Clarke Collection.
T.[homas] J.[ames] Clarke is an important pedigree in this Colonial Currency Collection and most notably an important ''name'' sale in the early days of NASCA auctions. A Canadian by birth, he was born in 1875, moved to upstate New York and passed in 1952. He collected Large Cents (the French Collection coins), Indian relics, Lincoln medals and paper money. Mehl bought his coins in 1939. His early core currency collection was in a 1955 Abe Kosoff Sale (November 8, 1955). [courtesy Pete Smith's American Numismatic Biographies] His notes are tagged with typewritten paper labels and he used cellophane to enclose the notes. Duplicates were no doubt consigned by Mr. Ford to the 1978 NASCA sale in support of their early efforts in the numismatic marketplace. His cost codes are typewritten, usually with a prefix and a ''/''. The ''HC'' seen logically would seem to be a Henry Chapman source code. However, that is conjecture on our part.
