MAINE. J.A. Buckman. 5¢ and 50¢. Mechanic Falls. 'Jan. 1, 1863'. Small format, typeset with beaded borders. Both are uniface Proofs on thick paper, without an imprint. Wait 1 and 4. Both Choice, each with a single POC; Pembroke Iron Co. 50¢. 'Jan. 1, 1863'. Black and white portions only, town scene in oval at upper left. Proof on thick card by L. Prang, Boston. Wait 3. Extremely Fine. Handling, back dismounting; N.M. Woodman, 'at my Junk Store No. 28 Oak St.' 25¢. Portland. 'Jan 1, 1863'. Typeset counter at upper left. Red '25' counter on back. Proof on thick paper with no imprint. Wait 256. Unusual dual sided proof. Choice About Uncirculated. Pinch of handling, small POC. Rare group of proofs, not often seen in this form. 4 pieces.

Lithographers generally used unissued notes with punch out cancels (''POC'') as sample notes. Proofs without tints or protectors are quite rare.
