State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations. September 5, 1776. Four Dollars. No.313. Signed by Arnold, Greene and Clarke. Printed on thick white paper. 71mm by 110mm. Printed on both sides, standard Rhode Island style. Within three border cuts are typeset texts, Rhode Island seal at left, signatures at bottom. Ornamental pattern back from edge to edge, 'Four Dollars' at center. Imprint 'PROVIDENCE: Printed by John Carter. 1776.'. A very scarce series with most known notes in low grade.
Thick paper stock notes such as this were subject to splitting after only a few foldings. The print figure in Newman is extremely low with only 600 notes authorized. As such, rare in any grade. This note is extraordinary and was a key acquisition by Mr. Ford in 1976. Choice Crisp Uncirculated and simply magnificent. There is only some trace handling on the corners. Bright white on both sides and well printed for the issue. There is a very faint surface soiling patch on the right face and three pinholes. This note should be the finest known if there is justice in this world.
Ex John Carter Brown Library Collection Sale (Pine Tree Auction Co., May 22, 1976, lot 1532).
